International meeting on Bastiat in Warsaw :

PAFERE LIBERTY WEEKEND
19-20 september 2009
Warsaw, Instytut Francuski, ul. Senatorska 38

The French writer and journalist, Frédéric Bastiat (1801-1850), certainly occupies a special position in the history of a free economy. He is primarily known from the simplicity of argument, and operating with simple, intuitive examples for the understanding of economic phenomena. Bastiat has also refuted myths of socialism and state’s omnipotence, showing their absurdity by pleading to the imagination of the reader with simple examples (e.g. metaphor of the broken glass or famous candle manufacturers petition). It seems that his achievements make him the undisputed king of the free market. Unfortunately, he is still little known in Poland and other countries of the former communist bloc.

Learning about the basic principles of free economy, the superiority of private ownership over that of the state with the help of works and achievements of Bastiat, seems to be the simple and effective way to understand the principles of free economy, which Poland and Europe extremely need nowadays.

The conference, organized by the PAFERE Foundation, a classical liberal association, shall deal with the following aspects of Bastiat’s thought: specificity arguments in favor of freedom and common sense, which raises the possibility of using the works of Bastiat in basic economic education of young generations. In addition, lecturers will seek to answer how economics has changed in 150 years after the death of Bastiat, and whether today's science is likely to benefit from his legacy. The goal of the conference is also an attempt to answer the question which of the modern trends of thought may be called a continuation of the economic views represented by the famous Frenchman? Jacques de Guenin, president of the Cercle Frédéric Bastiat will also cover the biography of Bastiat including his political career, his personal relationship with the Catholic religion, and his intellectual achievements.

The primary and chief purpose of the conference is to propagate in Poland the person and intellectual legacy of the French writer and journalist.
