There is nothing like economic freedom for making standards of living improve, ensuring full employment and thereby reducing inequality. Conversely, state intervention hinders progress and creates scarcity and unemployment. This is true even in countries that have not (yet?) experienced political freedom but have liberalised their economy.
There are now irrefutable data to support the above assertions. For the last 15 years, the American "Heritage" foundation, has published the ranking of all the countries in the world in decreasing order of economic freedom in a book titled Index of Economic Freedom. The book defines economic freedom and analyses the degree of economic freedom that can be found in each country. Copies of the book will be available during the Weekend on Economic Freedom, but it can be consulted as of now on the Internet (http:/www.heritage.org/Index). Its DVD version will be given to each participant.
The criteria characterising economic freedom, the ranking of countries and the links between economic freedom, prosperity and full employment will be presented to start with. The economic mechanisms that explain why these links exist will be developed next. Then it will be shown that, contrary to prevailing ideas, economic freedom reduces inequality.
The above truths thus definitively established will be illustrated by the recent history of a certain number of countries : China, India, Vietnam, Cuba, a few western socialist countries that have liberalised their economy, not forgetting France, about which one may ask why it is only ranked 64th out of 179 countries.
Finally, we shall ask ourselves whether or not the freeing of the economy would help us out of the crisis, what the role of the State would be and how solidarity would be put into action in a freed economy.
The programme lists the distinguished speakers who will deal with the different topics. The talks will last 45 minutes and will be followed by a discussion lasting 15 minutes.
The weekend will take place at the Calicéo hotel, in Saint-Paul-lès-Dax, a particularly pleasant hotel set on the banks of a lake (http://www.hotelcaliceo.com/). It offers vast thermal spring pools to help one get into shape. The cuisine is of a high quality.
The price of the weekend is 190€ per person in a double room, or 220€ per person in a single room. The price includes the two nights, meals, the Friday evening cocktail, breakfasts, the talks and coffee breaks.
If you wish to stay at the Calicéo hotel, which is much in demand, it would be wise to send us your registration before the end ofMay, together with a deposit of only 50€, the rest to be paid on arrival. You can register by e.mail.
